About Skylands Video Services

Skylands Video Services has been established with the inspiration of Howard’s passion and excitement of preserving family memories and telling stories. It all began as a young teenager when he started earning money as a paper boy. His first investment was a Kodak camera where he began taking photos and slides on a regular basis. Creating photo albums and performing family slide shows were a regular practice.

This passion continued through the years and Howard would always keep up with the latest technology of camera and video equipment as finances allowed. “I remember renting a VCR and VHS video cameras for special occasions in the early 80’s as the equipment was quite expensive. Capturing memories has always been important to me."

Howard also got exposed to personal computers through work when they first came out. He was always the go to person in the office on how to use any of the programs. As video technology moved to the PC, Howard was quick to get familiar with the latest video and photo editing software.

The real excitement was when his parents 50th anniversary was coming up. “We were planning a party with family and friends and wanted to do something special. Originally, I was only going to put out some old albums and maybe a poster board of photos. Then I saw the huge collection of old slides and video tapes we had. Most of this hadn’t been seen in ages with many of the family members no longer with us. Wow, wouldn’t it be special if I could incorporate the best of each media and present a life story.” He began collecting material and using special equipment to perform transfers. Video editing software allowed him to perform special effects such as the “Ken Burns” feature of panning and zooming images along with adding appropriate music, voice overs, rolling scripts and other items such as scanning the wedding invitation.

When everything was completed, the video was put on a DVD and presented at the party. Everyone there was mesmerized from start to finish. There were plenty of laughs and tears. “Everyone hugged me when it was over.” It was clear in Howard’s mind that this would be a great service to any family.

Howard continued doing transfers, editing and production for other events such as graduations, anniversaries, wedding, birthdays, etc on the side. Each year technology got better and he was able to enhance his productions. Then in 2015, he discovered Home Video Studio Network, a group of studios across the US, Canada and Europe specializing in the work he was performing.

In joining Home Video Studios Howard was able to leverage the network of owners and follow an established model with state of the art equipment, software and processes to provide customers a high quality product at a fair price. The network includes workshops during the year where all owners get together to keep up with technology, create new offerings, and share best practices.
